Amtrak's Chicago (SA-3)
Chicago is a big hub for Amtrak passenger trains, and a great place to see a nice sampling of their locomotive fleet. The majestic Sears Tower stands tall in the center background. Lake Michigan's shoreline is behind these magnificent skyscrapers. When it comes to railroad track, Illinois, Chicago being the principle city, is second only to the entire state of Texas in the number of miles of railroad track. More transcontinental Amtrak trains arrive and depart Chicago's Union Station than any other major terminal in America - not to mention commuter trains.
Front and center under the glittering Chicago skyline at dusk, is the recent backbone of the fleet, the EMD F40PH. Flanking the 365 are the new kids on the block built by General Electric. Amtrak B32-8WH number 519 is a unit delivered during the development of the now common Genesis locomotive, represented by 824.
The era of the Electro-Motive Division F40PH is drawing to a close as these General Electric usurpers await their next run at Amtrak's 21st street engine facility in Chicago.
